St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church
138 Fairfield St. SE
A musical rite of the holiday season, the Baroque-era oratorio still awes listeners for 250 years after the composer’s death. The English-language oratorio composed in 1741 by George Frederic Handel with a scriptural text compiled by Charles Jennens from the King James Bible, was first performed in Dublin as an Easter offering in April 1742. It received its London premiere almost a year later and has become one of the best known and most frequently performed choral works in Western music. Four soloists and chorus join the Aiken Symphony Orchestra at St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church for this special Christmas concert.
Founded in 1853, the parish of St. Mary Help of Christians has served diligently to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ for over 150 years to the people of Aiken.
